We will be getting together with the 8th grade for the picnic this year because all 7th grade teachers are also 8th grade teachers.We are asking each 7th grade student to bring in $3-$5 and we will be getting everything needed for the picnic. Eagle Ridge Academy Open House

Eagle Ridge Academy will be hosting an open house for all 8th grade students and their families on March 16th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00p.m. This is an opportunity for those students/parents who have not yet decided where they will be going to high school next year, to come to the facility and talk with the principal and the counselor and also take a tour of the school.

Pi Day

Pi Day is coming very shortly! March 14th is a huge holiday for mathematicians and scientists around the world. We will be celebrating Pi Day in class on Monday, Match 14th. We are looking for students to bring in pies on Pi Day. (I will provide all paper products.) We will be measuring the diameter and circumference of each pie that is brought to class to see how close we can get to the number pi. I will also tell a few cool facts about pi and some history about this interesting number. Please come join the fun or donate a pie!

Middle School Math Club

The second semester Middle School Math Club is starting today, Tuesday, January 18th from 3:45 to 4:45 in Mrs. Frazier's room. We will be doing several fun math activities over the semester. Today we start with 'The Numbers Game'. Next month, we will meet in Mrs. Cornish's room on Tuesday, February 22nd from 3:45 to 4:45 for another game: What Date is That? Come join the fun with Mrs. Frazier and Mrs. Cornish this semester at the Middle School Math Club!

The weather is finally matching the season, winter is surely here. I have outside duty this week and I watched many 7th and 8th grade students come to school today and yesterday with only a sweatshirt on and it was -4 degrees this morning. Please be sure to dress warmly on days like these, the kiddos usually go outside for recess as well. Coats, hats, gloves are great accessories during this time of year. ;-)

In my periods 2 and 7, Pre-algebra, I will no longer accept late work. The students need to get ready for high school next year and take responsibility with their assignments. Last quarter students were very laid back about due dates, so this quarter, no late assignments will be accepted. Thanks so much for your support!

First semester is done, over, and finished!

It is now time to move on and put forth all of our effort into this second semester to finish up the 2010-2011 school year.

I am looking forward to some great learning in every class this semester, going to Sea Camp in February, tackling CSAP testing in March to show all of our hard work this year and finishing the school year on a fabulous note! Here is to a great 2011!

I cannot believe this first semester is over already! It has been so wonderful to have 7th and 8th grade students. I continue to learn from them on a daily basis, so that I can be a better teacher. Thanks to all the parents/guardians for your support and communication! I truly love all my classes and am looking forward to a great second semester. Math Grading System

Middle School Math Grades – Effective immediately, the grading for middle school math will revert back to traditional letter grades. We believe the most effective vehicle to communicate your student’s progress is through traditional percentages that align with letter grades. Another change effective immediately, each quarter report card grade will reflect the student’s work during that quarter only. We will not have cumulative quarter nor semester grades. Extra credit will continue to not be an option for math classes.

Bromley East Charter 7th & 8th Graders have the wonderful opportunity to go to Washington DC and Sea Camp next year! Since this is a new addition to their curriculum and we know some families need additional help, we decided we would like to help them out with a Family Portrait Fundraiser. Parent/Teacher Conferences – Middle school conferences will be held on Monday, October 25th to Wednesday, October 27th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. in teacher’s classrooms, arena style, which means that you do not need to sign up ahead of time. These will be short, 5 minute meetings to check in with each of your middle school student’s teachers to review report card grades and to hear areas of concern and celebrate your child’s achievements. We would love to see your student with you at conferences, so we can talk to him/her as well! Please follow the schedule based on the first letter of the student’s last name. (If you are unable to attend at your assigned day, you are welcome to attend one of the other dates).

Standards Based Grading

As you know, the Middle School Math Department has switched to Standards Based Grading this school year. Due to this change, your child’s progress report for math looks different. Your child will no longer receive a “letter” grade for assignments. Home practice is included in the progress report but is not calculated in the “grade”. (Note the ** beside these assignments) The “IN” indicates a child turned in the work, but it was not “graded” as a score. “M” indicates missing, “I” indicates Incomplete, and “L” indicates late. These assignments are included as an indicator of practice, which should correlate to their score on their post evidence for each section. Also, “pre-evidence” is not included in the grade, but is recorded in order to show a student’s growth.

Just a reminder, that a score of “3” is grade level for your child. If your child receives a 2, they are still “passing”. A score below 2 indicates lack of understanding for that standard. Please note, the grade will continue to change throughout the ENTIRE school year, and a 1 is not unexpected this early in the year. As the year continues, I will contact you if I feel the 1 is something to be concerned about. Also, a score of higher than 3 indicates above grade level for a particular standard.

It is VERY early, and I know there is not a lot of evidence. The only evidence will be post-evidence, projects and a few in class assessments. We are completing our first project that is due this Monday, October 4^th. This project will be worth twice as much as our class evidence. This is a great opportunity for your child to prove they have understanding of a standard. PLEASE make sure THEY are doing the assignment, so I am able to assess their work as a true indicator of understanding. Thank you for your cooperation in this. 1. Students need to wear uniforms. Please ask students to wear their “best” uniform – no lace up shoe/boots and other overt infractions to the dress code. They are representing our school – ask them to be as “crisp” as possible!

Infinite Campus is finally fixed for Mrs. Cornish's classes!!!! Check out your student's grades and remember we are doing standards based grading! If you do see a percentage showing up, please ignore it, you are looking for a 1, 2, 3, or 4. Please let me know if you have any questions!

(If you notice your child has 1's, ask them if they corrected the evidence (everyone was given the opportunity). If there are any missing assignments, students are not allowed to correct evidence.)

If you prefer to receive a paper copy of materials, you will need to request this option by signing a form available in the front office. The PTO fundraiser is due by Wednesday, September 22nd. Please give money and order forms to your home room teacher.

There is a fundraiser Saturday, September 25th at Chilis in Brighton from 7:00 to 10:00AM, to benefit the 8th grade students going to Sea Camp. You can purchase tickets at the BECS front office or at the door.

MAP Testing

MAP testing will begin on Wednesday, September 8th and continue until at least Wednesday, September 22nd. Please be sure students are getting plenty of rest and eating well, so they are ready for these tests. MAP tests give valuable information about your student to the teachers and administration. There will be NO retakes if your student does not perform well the first time. Please be sure your student is ready to take these tests seriously, we really do get important information from MAP testing. If you have any questions, please let me know.
